Red Wine Health Benefits (Feel Good About That Glass Of Wine)

Updated: Jun 2, 2019

Are you looking for an excuse to feel good about that glass of red wine you want to drink? I’ve got 5 solid reasons why that glass might be gold. At the bottom of this post, I am going to give you a list of my favorite healthy red wines out there.

Why Red?

So red wine, in particular, gets most of the acclaim bc it contains the compound called Resveratrol. Resveratrol is released from the skins of the grapes and white wine isn’t usually made with the grape skins the way red wines are, so this is why RED wines are said to be healthier. This is also why wines with thicker skins may be even better and I’ll give you some of those in my guide at the end.

Resveratrol:

So what is it about Resveratrol? It acts as an antioxidant to defy ageing and The Mayo Clinic says, “Resveratrol might be a key ingredient in red wine that helps prevent damage to blood vessels, reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) and prevents blood clots.” Sounds pretty good. We are off to a good start.

And get this: It might reduce the chances of Osteoporosis and Type 2 Diabetes.

According to this article: Red wine has high levels of silicon, which is great for your bone mineral density. Resveratrol has been proven to improve sensibility to insulin.

OK the red wine is sounding tastier and tastier, right? Comment below with what glass you are going to drink tonight.

And I am just getting to the best parts... Dr. Axe claims that it can Burn Body Fat????!!!!

According to Dr. Axe, red wine in small amounts helps your body burn body fat and in small quantities detoxes your liver.

And I loved this article that a friend sent me about how wine “Wine tasting can work the brain more than math, according to neuroscience!!!” Check it out here.

Now, of course, you need to weigh these things against your own circumstances - are you at risk for alcoholism, pregnant, or have any other risk factors and what does your doctor say? Remember I am not a doctor, I am your wine friend here to give you ANY excuse to enjoy wine and the recommendations to go with it.

And while I don’t know for sure if any of these claims are 100% true, what I can say is that I use wine as an opportunity to exhale, pause and toast moments in life. While I could choose to do this without a glass in my hand, I find this enjoyment of something made with care, attention and complexity is really something amazing so I’d add that you could use wine as a tool to remember what is truly exceptional in life and to toast to that.
